2011 Public Art Project Sets Sail for Walworth County Exhibition Featuring Painted Boats to Raise Funds for SMILES Therapeutic Riding Center

DARIEN, WI – Back by popular demand, Special Methods in Learning Equine Skills, Inc. (SMILES) is planning a public art exhibition to set sail for Walworth County. The “Anchor’s Away” 2011 Public Art Project will feature over 100 masterfully painted fiberglass sailboats and Chris Craft boats by local, regional and national artisans. The sculptures will be prominently displayed for public viewing throughout Walworth County during the summer of 2011. All proceeds from the project will benefit SMILES, a therapeutic riding center for adults and children with disabilities.

“We are very excited to integrate the boats throughout the communities of Walworth County this year,” said Sherry Monty, executive director of SMILES.  “It’s so fitting to see our area of Southeast Wisconsin, known for its sparkling lakes, showcased by one-of-a-kind artisan created boats.”

The painted boats will be displayed for the first time and all together at the Boat Launch event on Sunday, June 5, before setting sail throughout Walworth County for the summer. The event is open to the public. After being docked all summer in their port-of-call communities, the boats will be auctioned on Sunday, September 25 with all proceeds benefitting SMILES.  Both events will take place and are sponsored by The Abbey Resort, 269 Fontana Blvd. in Fontana, WI.

All artisans interested in painting a boat are welcome to submit a proposal to the Anchor’s Away Artist Review Panel by February 18, 2011.  Artists will have four months to complete the project. Artisan packets are available for download at or by contacting SMILES at (262) 882-3470.

SPONSORSHIP INFORMATIONParties interested in sponsoring a boat to be displayed at a business with public access are asked to download the sponsorship packet at or contact SMILES at (262) 882-3470.  Based on previous attendance, it’s estimated that tens of thousands of people will be visiting Walworth County to view the project. So, don’t miss the boat on this wonderful opportunity to generate awareness for your business while helping touch the lives of children and adults with disabilities. SMILES Based in Darien, WI, SMILES is a 35-acre therapeutic riding center for adults and children with disabilities.  The equine assisted program serves over 400 challenged individuals per year with the majority of participants residing in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
